The race, which also includes a 100K distance, is held on the mountainous Okinoshima island off Japan’s northwestern coast. The races attract about 1,000 participants. According to Japan Running News, Kawauchi holds the course record of 2:44:07, and he has run it eight times. Today’s result was his second-slowest time on the hilly course.
It was a fitting Father’s Day tribute, since Kawauchi’s late father grew up on Okinoshima.
Look for Kawauchi’s name on the list of elites for Australia’s Gold Coast Marathon on July 1 when those announcements are made this week. This will be Kawauchi’s seventh straight year of participation at this marathon, and he has finished in the top 10 every time (he finished fourth in 2012, first in 2013, third in 2014, eighth in 2015, second in 2016, and third last year).
