Gold medallist Evan Dunfee talks historic victory, super shoes, and why everyone should try a shorter race
The Canadian record-holder thought his career was coming to a close, until he sprinted to a surprise gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

Evan Dunfee is one of Canada’s most decorated track and field athletes. He won medals at the Pan Am Games, the World Championships, and the Olympics. But the one piece of hardware that has eluded him is a medal from the Commonwealth Games.

When World Athletics announced that it would be dropping Evan’s specialty, the 50K race walk, and replacing it with a 35K event, Evan was crushed. He thought his career might be coming to a close. But then he surprised himself in Birmingham with a Commonwealth Games gold medal in a Games and Canadian 10K record one week later.
