Heather Gardner on cultivating an inclusive run crew community and growing through discomfort

For the last decade, Heather Gardner has been a leader in the Toronto running and fitness communities. She is a marathoner, yoga teacher and indoor cycling instructor guided by the values of inclusion and body positivity.

Four years ago Heather opened her own studio under the name Tribe Fitness and increased her already substantial following. But in the spring, criticism of this name and its hurtful implications for Indigenous Peoples led her to reflect and ultimately change the name of her business to Kardia Athletica. I chatted with Heather last week about her commitment to her communities, and to doing right by them.
