Masters runner Stuart Galloway won the Niagara Falls International Marathon last weekend, his first win at that distance in more than 20 years, at the age of 56.

The Fonthill, Ont. resident finished ahead of the 1,005 other entrants in the race winning by six minutes in 2:51:07. Galloway’s marathon career dates back more than 20 years with a win at the Harrisburg Marathon in 1994, a year after placing third at the Pennsylvania-based race. He has a personal best of 2:31:35, according to the Association of Road Racing Statistics, and says he’s “more at home on the track,” citing a world masters championships win in the M55 1,500m last year in Australia.

Galloway set M55 Canadian records at the indoor 1,500m, mile (1,609m), 3,000m and 5,000m in 2016 as well as outdoor marks in the mile, 5,000m and 10,000m.

As you can tell from the photos, Galloway wore a DIY singlet with custom holes cut out to encourage airflow to his body. He got the idea from watching American Galen Rupp don similar attire (see below) at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the marathon. “It helps,” he says.

Ron Hill wore “mesh shirts” in the 1960s that he eventuall designed for his RON HILL company based in England. He also ran a 2:09 marathon in the 1970s…And Galen Rupp stole the idea from his coach Alberto Salazar who did the same in his 1984 Olympic Marathon…

You sound like a real know it all. Tell me, how do you steal and idea from your own coach?
