STWM athlete profile: Getting to know Kevin Coffey

These are the top Canadian talents competing for the national marathon championships at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon on Oct. 22

Kevin Coffey

As part of our coverage of the 2017 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon on Oct. 22, we’re profiling the top Canadian athletes set to compete at the Canadian Marathon Championships.

RELATED: See more STWM athlete profiles here.

Name: Kevin Coffey
Age: 31 (years young)
Hometown: Kingston, Ont.
Current location: Vancouver
Associated club/coach: B.C. Endurance Project/Richard Lee
Previous marathons: 7
Marathon PB: 2:21:40 (STWM 2014)

Describe yourself: A runner, coach (Mile2Marathon), fan of smoothies, Netflix enthusiast, enjoy long runs on the beach, can’t turn down a cupcake and always a fan of Canadian small talk (weather, sports and politics).

Most notable running/racing experience: I would say the 2017 Oregon State University High-Performance Meet (5,000m). It was a day when almost everything went right. I ran 14:07.16. If I had more experience racing 5,000m, I think I would have had a shot at breaking 14:00. Maybe next time.

How has training for STWM gone? I came out the gate a little rough (had a hip injury from track season). It settled down with the help of a great physiotherapist and an excellent coach.

Why STWM? Great course and the Canada Running Series always has well-organized events that are welcoming not only for the athletes but also the fans.

Goals for the race: Got to be honest here, I’m just hoping to finish. I have had troubles with my last three marathons. However, like most everyone else, I’m hoping to cross the finish line and beat my personal best.

What gear will you be sporting? I will be wearing Mizuno apparel and their amazing Wave Sonic shoe.
