Hot and humid conditions in southern Ontario on the weekend failed to deter trail runners at the Sulphur Springs race in Ancaster. The May 28-29 race, which included a 10K, 25K, 50K, 50-mile, 100-mile and 100-mile relay, was run for the 24th time on the weekend.

The weekend was notoriously hot for runners across Ontario and in the northeast as races in Ottawa, Vermont and Toronto were altered, either in terms of distance run or start times, because of the heat and humidity.

Temperatures topped 30 C in Ancaster and felt even hotter because of the humidity but unlike many road races, runners were able to take shelter in the forests of Dundas Valley Conservation Area.

The winner, Davin Oskvig, from Amherst, N.Y., set a new course record for the event covering the 100-mile course in 15:33:34. That translates roughly to 5:48 per kilometre pace for 160K. The previous record was 15:37:24, set in 2013 by Dale Draaistra. Laura Perry’s 17:49:54 for the 100-mile race is the event’s best for women.

Catherine Kelly, also 39, was the top woman in the 100-mile event in 23:18:32.

Oskvig ran 2:56:37 at the 2016 Boston marathon, also run in hot conditions, in April. He understandably celebrated across the finish line, which was captured in the below video.

The race began at Ancaster Community Centre followed by loops of the Dundas Valley trail system.

The event had a last-minute scare after a courier company misplaced runners’ chips and bibs. Fortunately, Ottawa-based BibNumbers.com did an emergency re-print of the race numbers and were able to get them to the race in time for the start.
