96-year-old fails to break 95+ age-group record in the 800m

Fremont unable to repeat his earlier success in the mile, but reports a "marvellous experience" nonetheless

Mike Fremont, the 96-year-old star of the Drake Relays who broke the road mile record in the 95-plus age group on Tuesday with a time of 13:55.82, unfortunately did not succeed in his attempt to break the 800m record this morning in Des Moines, Iowa.

Fremont recorded a time of 6:46.68. The record, held by the late Herb Kirk, is 6:02.94, set in 1991. Kirk died the day after he turned 106, in 2001.

A resident of Bozeman, Montana, Kirk still holds numerous age-group track records. His obituary in the Bozeman Daily Chronicle reports that he was an excellent tennis player who took up running in his 80s, when he could no longer play tennis due to his failing eyesight.
