It was one of the most famous moments of the 2016 Olympics. On the women’s 5,000m semi-finals, two athletes clashed, fell to the track but risked the rest of their race to help each other get back up again. New Zealand runner Nikki Hamblin and American athlete Abbey D’Agostino were on their eighth lap of the race when they got into a tangle and took a fall. It was clear for those who were watching the race in Rio that D’Agostino was suffering from a fairly serious injury because of the crash.

After they fell, both runners helped each other to their feet and stayed to check that the other was alright. D’Agostino fell to the track again but Hamblin stayed with her. Despite injury, both runners completed the race taking the last two spots. Not only were they given the go-ahead to advance to the finals because of the accident and their display of sportsmanship, but they were also awarded the rare Pierre de Coubertin medal– reserved for those athletes who display a strong sense of sportsmanship at the Olympic Games. Prior to this, it had only been awarded 17 times.

After D’Agostino was wheeled away in  a wheelchair, it was no surprise that she suffered major injuries including a torn ACL. She had to undergo surgery but has since announced how her recovery has been going. According to her recent Instagram post, she is no longer bed ridden and is slowly getting back to the workouts. As of recent, D’Agostino has been in the pool and on the bike. She has been cleared to do lane swimming and is able to do a full rotation on the bike.

This isn’t the only big news for the athlete. Last week, Team USA got to spend the day at The White House. While there, President Obama specifically spoke about D’Agostino’s moment in Rio. He said that her actions towards Hamblin were “a remarkable sentiment in an individual event.”
