Athletics Canada has announced a new multi-year partnership with the Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery of Barrie, Ont.

Fans will be able to enjoy the Flying Monkeys’ award-winning craft beers at Athletics Canada events starting July 5 at the Canadian Track & Field Championships in Ottawa, continuing at Track & Field in the 6ix, which take place in Toronto from August 10-12, and at the Canadian Cross Country Championships in Kingston, Ont. in November.

Flying Monkeys’ principals are track stars in their own right, even if it was a few years back.

Founder and president Peter Chiodo won the steeplechase event at Junior Nationals in 1985 and later attended the University of Alabama on a full track and field scholarship. Eastern Ontario Territory Manager Doug Consiglio is an Olympian and Athletics Canada alumnus, running the 1,500m in Seoul in 1988. It was Consiglio’s idea to partner with Athletics Canada, noting that the habit of embracing challenge is something craft brewers have in common with runners.

“Post-run beers or cold brews after tough workouts are ingrained in our culture,” says Chiodo. “And no matter how old or out-of-shape athletes get, we always want to give back to the sports that formed us.”

The Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery is also the Official Craft Beer Sponsor of Canadian runner Corey Bellemore, the current two-time Beer Mile World recordholder who made his Diamond League debut last week at Doha, Qatar. Bellemore turned in a very respectable performance and a new PB of 3:41.34.
