With the addition of these events, Athletics Canada will launch its own National Track and Field Tour, which is made up of 10 meets in 10 cities across Canada, with a total prize purse of $400,000 for competing athletes. The tour hopes to provide more opportunities for Canadian athletes and attract international talent to Canadian meets.
This high-performance track and field series is scheduled to start in time for the 2022 outdoor season, with the first meet on May 14 in Burnaby, B.C. and running until the 2022 World Athletics Championship in Oregon in mid-July.
‘This move will help provide meaningful competition for developing athletes at home,” says Athletics Canada director of domestic programs Chris Winter. “We do not want our athletes to feel they have to leave Canada to compete.”
