What’s the best dog breed to run with? For many, bulldogs likely aren’t the first that come to mind. Their stocky build would probably deter many from assuming that they would make natural runners. But a group of bulldog lovers in Toronto would disagree.

This past Sunday in the city’s east end, a large gathering of bulldog owners got together for the inaugural “Running of the Bulldogs” race. The name, borrowed from a Minneapolis event by the same name, ran at Toronto’s Silver Birch Park according to a report done by The Toronto Star.

At the race, six heats of 10 to 12 dogs showed up to run. Their owners enticed them to the finish with dog treats, says the news report. Some of the canines even had their owners assigned to pacing duty and had them run alongside them during the race.

The event was put on by Paul McErlain and Christina Branko who also head the Toronto English Bulldog Club.

The Running of the Bulldogs started at 11:00 a.m. and with the success it had, it’s likely that Torontonians will be seeing more in the future because it was so popular.
