Ethan Katzberg of Nanaimo, B.C., became a household name in track and field in 2024, bringing home Olympic gold for Canada in the men’s hammer throw at the Paris Games. The Olympic gold capped off a dominant season for Katzberg, who won 11 of his 12 hammer throw competitions. Now, he is one of five male nominees for the World Athletics Field Athlete of the Year award.

At just 22, Katzberg has risen to the top of the hammer throw world, holding the title of both world and Olympic champion (simultaneously). In May, he set a Canadian record with a throw of 84.38 metres at the Kip Keino Continental Tour in Nairobi, Kenya—the farthest throw by any competitor since 2008.

Katzberg is up against some strong contenders. The other nominees include Olympic shot put champion Ryan Crouser (USA), men’s Olympic triple jump champion Jordan Alejandro Díaz Fortún (Spain), world and Olympic long jump champion Miltiadis Tentoglou (Greece), and pole vault champion and world record holder Mondo Duplantis (Sweden).

How to vote

You can help Katzberg become a finalist for the award by voting for the Field Athlete of the Year on World Athletics’ social media platforms. Voting will close on Sunday, Oct. 20. The final decision will be determined by three voting groups: the World Athletics Council’s vote, which counts for 50 per cent of the result, while the World Athletics Family’s votes and social media votes will each account for 25 per cent. Voting can be done through ‘likes’ on Facebook and Instagram posts, or retweets on X (formerly Twitter).

The nominees for the Track Athlete of the Year awards will be announced on Oct. 21, followed by the non-stadia Athlete of the Year nominees on Oct. 28.
