Canadian elite runners and the emojis that suit them

Who gets the burrito emoji? And how about the two dancing women emojis?

Following a tweet by 2011 Boston Marathon runner-up and perennial standout on the American distance running scene, Desiree Linden, that paired professional runners to emojis, we’ve decided to come up with our own #RunMojis – Canadian Running edition. Some are nailed. Others…we’ll let you decide.

Charles Philibert-Thiboutot: ? (burrito)

All right, most know that CPT is a taco enthusiast, so why the burrito? Well, a burrito is essentially a taco with a soft shell, and this Mexican delicacy best suits the Quebecois’ attitudes towards the weather. The 2016 Olympian runs away from his home province every winter to train in British Columbia, because Quebec is “too cold.” That’s soft.

Sasha Gollish: ? (sick face)

“It’s not easy being green,” famously said Kermit the Frog. Based on the title of her latest blog post, Gollish seems to empathize with the famous Muppet. She unfortunately missed the 2017 Canadian Cross-Country Championships due to an illness.

Melissa Bishop: ? (bride)

The Canadian track and field community stood still this past Thanksgiving when Melissa Bishop tied the knot with her now husband, Osi Nriagu. Let’s hope 2018 sees Bishop make Caster Semenya, Margaret Wambui and Francine Niyonsaba her bridesmaids.

Eric Gillis and Evan Esselink: ? (two dancers)

Canadian Running blogger and 2016 Olympian Anthony Romaniw (?) captioned it best.

Trevor Hofbauer: ?? (party hat and face with money tongue)

Hofbauer probably second-guessed his lengthy celebration following this year’s Canadian Marathon Championships – as his finish time was just a few seconds shy of bonus cash territory. Since the incident, however, a popular GoFundMe page was created to avenge his loss. We’re pretty sure the Speed River Track Club athlete is rolling in cash right now.

Hilary Stellingwerff: ? (cat)

The two-time Olympian has been the face of consistency throughout her career. She’s on life six right about now.

Evan Dunfee: ? (runner)

OK, hear me out. If you look really closely, you can see that this emoji has both feet on the ground. I think. We’ll let it slide.

Luc Bruchet: ? (pig/mud)

Nobody looks happier in the mud (cross-country anyone?) than this mileage hog.

Reid Coolsaet: ? (sunglasses)

He has the second fastest marathon time in Canadian history, behind Jerome Drayton (?), he skateboards a mile faster than he can run one, and he’s a dad. How cool’s that?

Rob Watson: ? (one beer)

A 2:13 marathon PB earns this brew aficionado a drink.

Dylan Wykes: ? (two beers)

A 2:10 marathoner? Two drinks.

Lanni Marchant: ?‍⚖️ (judge)

A criminal lawyer who got to run the 10K and marathon in Rio 2016 by winning her case against Athletics Canada. If someone takes CR to court for the recap of Canadian Cross-Country Championships, she may be of help.

John Lofranco: ? (turtle), Steve Boyd: ? (rabbit)

These two well-respected coaches engaged in a captivating debate concerning easy run pace. Are you team hare or team tortoise?
