Chris Chavez and Malcom Gladwell face off tonight
After weeks of build-up, the two journalists are finally going head-to-head in a one-mile showdown Friday night

Two weeks ago journalists Chris Chavez and Malcolm Gladwell made it official that they would both be lining up in the NYC Qualifier, the final event of the Trials of Miles series, going head-to-head in a mile showdown. The night has finally arrived, and the pair will be toeing the line at 7:15 p.m. EST.
The @trialsmiles NYC Qualifier broadcast starts at 6 pm ET on the @CitiusMag YouTube channel. My race is at 7:15 pm.
Hopefully there’s enough time for the officials to drag my body off the track and into the booth for some commentary on the pro races

Since the official announcement, the two have had an amusing back-and-forth on Twitter, generating even more excitement around the race. Most of the rapport, not surprisingly, has focused on the 30-year age gap between the two men, Chavez being 27 and Gladwell being 57.
He’s 27. I’m 57. He’s Gen Z. I’m I dunno Gen A? Does the gen thing even go back that far? pic.twitter.com/LoKTf683kA

Chavez, for his part, has not shied away from poking fun at his older competitor:
My mother is so confused why I’m racing an old man.

Who will win?
It’s tough to say definitively what will happen tonight, but many people are putting their money on the younger Chavez, who holds a mile PB of 5:09. He has also made it known that he is gunning for a sub-5 finish, which may be enough to take the win. Gladwell’s most recent mile time is 5:11, which he ran at the 2017 NYRR Fifth Avenue Mile. These results make Chavez the clear favourite, but we won’t count Gladwell out just yet — anything can happen on race day.
You can catch all the action and find out who comes out on top this evening on the CitiusMag YouTube channel. The night of racing kicks off with the women’s 800m at 6:10 p.m., and Chavez and Gladwell’s race is set to start at 7:15 p.m.
