Alberta sprinter gets Twitter shoutout from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

The American actor and producer responds to University of Alberta sprinter's call out for a dinner date

University of Alberta sprinter Ashley Whiteman’s Twitter notifications were likely going off like crazy after she got a shoutout from American actor Dwayne Johnson.

On Monday, U Sports, the national governing body for Canadian university athletics, posted a profile of Whiteman to its website. In the story, Whiteman answered “Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson” to who in the sports world she would want to share a dinner date with citing the fact that “he’s hardworking, funny and gives back where it’s due.” The Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas, who Whiteman competes for, shared the article and tagged Johnson on Twitter.

Johnson, famous for being a WWF (now WWE) wrestler and now an actor and movie producer, took notice and responded to Whiteman, a native of Devon, Alta. The actor has a massive social media audience with 12 million followers on Twitter and another 99 million on Instagram. It’s not rare for Johnson to recognize members of the community on his feeds either.

“What an incredibly accomplished woman! Congrats Ashley!” Johnson, who stars in the recent movie Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, said on Twitter quote-tweeting the Whiteman article. “Look forward to our dinner one day. I’ll pay of course, but you must laugh at my extremely cheesy jokes. Keep doing it strong and congrats again!”

“This is awesome, you’re awesome,” Whiteman wrote in response to Johnson on Twitter. “Thank you for being a positive influence on so many! Cheesy jokes are my favourite to laugh at.” Whiteman won 300m gold at the 2016 national university championships and earned Canada West Women’s Track Athlete of the Year honours in 2017.
