Vancouver’s Fraser Street Run Club hosted its third annual beer mile on Saturday. The event, which involves consuming four beers and running four 400m laps, has become increasingly popular in recent years due in part to the creation of two global events.

The running and drinking race is also popular among run clubs and the local community. Thirty-six keen runners finished the Dec. 3 event with some local elites also giving the beer mile a shot. Chris Winter, a 2016 Olympian, asked followers before the race who would win between him and Rob Watson.

The local road and trail running club hired Race Day Timing Services to officially track the event to make times legitimate. In line with the start of the holiday season, many runners, and spectators, dressed up for the occasion. Costumes included Santa Claus, a banana, onesies and many more. Watson edged out Winter in the battle between the two, an outcome that fans predicted on Winter’s Twitter poll. Andrew Hall ran an impressive 5:59 for top male honours. Michelle ran 7:46 to win the women’s race. Full results from the event can be found here.

“Holy smokes what a race it was,” organizers wrote on Instagram. “The men’s field was stacked with a whole bunch of speedsters. In the end, out of nowhere, Andrew Hall dominated the race from the get-go and finished in 5:59, followed by Robbie Watson in 6:15 and Chris winter in 6:30. For the women’s race Michelle Heneghan (last year’s second-place female) won in 7:46 a whole six minutes ahead of second female Julie and third Meryn.”

Fraser Street Run Club was founded in 2013. All runs except for Track Tuesdays are free and anyone, regardless of fitness level, is welcome to join. Have photos from the event or your run club’s beer mile? Tag @CanadianRunning on Twitter or Instagram.
