High schooler lands prom date with former model and elite steepler

A high school runner asked Colleen Quigley, a former model turned distance athlete, to prom on the weekend and managed to grab her number.

High school athletes don’t get many chances to ask elites questions, especially in front of their peers and other running celebrities.

While in Portland, Ore. at Nike Cross Nationals (the peak of cross-country running in the United States) several runners probably had running-related questions in mind. But high school runner Max Lehnhardt had his senior prom in mind while he was at the Q & A.

“Miss Colleen Quigley,” asked Lehnhardt through a microphone off-stage. “Will you go to prom with me?”

Encouraged by Olympian Matt Centrowitz to come on-stage in front of a panel that included Galen Rupp, Evan Jager, and Mo Farah, Lehnhardt got down on one knee and went through with his ‘promposal.’

Quigley responded, “How can I say no to that?”

Quigley, a former model who worked with JC Penney, Nordstrom, and Glamour, finished 12th at the IAAF World Championships in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase. She currently trains with Bowerman TC, alongside the group’s newest addition, Canadian Matt Hughes.

For good measure, Lenhardt, a senior from Carl Sandburg High School in Illinois, managed to grab Quigley’s number to iron out the details.

Since prom typically occurs in late spring, it’s questionable whether the trip to Illinois will be in the cards as Quigley, who is based in Oregon, gears up for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Lehnhardt was encouraged by friends to ask the question, with other high schoolers reportedly offering the high schooler donuts, cash, and Nike gear to get Quigley’s cell number. No dice.

It wasn’t the first time that Quigley has been asked out publicly as FloTrack featured Quigley in a parody song on its weekly show, Run Junkie. Quigley’s boyfriend of six years thought Lehnhardt’s stunt was hilarious.
