How runners can support Australian bushfire relief

How Canadian runners can support the bushfire relief efforts

The Australian bushfires that have ripped through New South Wales and parts of Victoria have killed 20 people and left thousands without homes. If you’d like to support relief efforts by doing something you (probably) already planned to, Relief Run is a good place for runners to start.

The Relief Run is either a 21.1K or 5K virtual run that you can participate in anytime from January 18-19. All proceeds will go towards the Australian Red Cross disaster and relief fund. Registration costs $50, with the option of an additional donation. You can enter alone or with a team of two at no additional cost.

As far as we know, Canada is the only country outside of Australia and New Zealand that’s hosting a community run. Join Plant Based Mother Runner at Riverdale Park East for a 21.1K at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, January 19 for a run in Toronto.

Genevieve Gregson is an Olympic steeplechase finalist from Australia. Gregson asked her followers on social media to please donate whatever they are able. “To anybody feeling helpless from afar seeing these disturbing scenes of disaster to the communities, wildlife and land, please follow below and help anyway you can. NSW RFS (New South Wales Rural Fire Service) have said the best way to help is to donate money to: Australian Red Cross Disaster Recovery and Relief, Salvation Army Disaster Appeal or St. Vincent de Paul Society Bushfire Appeal. Another way to contribute is to support our incredibly brave and selfless volunteer fire fighters in NSW: NSW RFS donation page, make an online donation to the NSW RFS Trust Fund or a participating brigade.”
