How to watch Joshua Cheptegei’s 10,000m world record attempt

Joshua Cheptegei and Letesenbet Gidey will chase world records in Valencia on Wednesday

Joshua Cheptegei 2022 World Champs

One of the biggest days of the 2020 athletics calendar is almost here: NN Valencia World Record Day. This is an event organized by the NN Running Team, and while it was originally billed as an event solely to help Joshua Cheptegei set a new 10,000m world record, that is no longer the case. In addition to Cheptegei’s run, there will be a 5,000m world record attempt from Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey. Here’s where you can find a stream for what could be a historical day at Valencia’s Turia Stadium.

How to watch

The event will be easy to find, and anyone with an internet connection can watch it on the NN Running Team’s YouTube channel. The run will take place on Wednesday, and the action is set to get underway at 9:30 p.m. local time (3:30 p.m. ET). The women’s 5,000m is the first race on the docket, and Cheptegei is set to start his run shortly after Gidey and the other women have cleared the track. There will be seven men racing alongside Cheptegei, plus six pacemakers, and the smaller women’s field will feature six racers and two women on pacing duty.

Who to watch

The main runner to watch is, of course, Cheptegei. After running the 5,000m world record in August, he has his eyes on the 10,000m best. If he can break the current world record of 26:17.53 — which has been held by his NN Running teammate Kenenisa Bekele for 15 years — he will boost his total world record count to four, adding to his crowns in the 5K, 5,000m and 15K. His PB over 10,000m is 26:48.36, and while a world record would be a huge jump, if anyone can make that leap, it’s Cheptegei.

With a 14:23.14 PB for the 5,000m, Gidey will be looking to break Tirunesh Dibaba‘s 12-year-old world record of 14:11.15. Gidey has raced one 5,000m already this year at the Monaco Diamond League (the same event where Cheptegei ran his world record), where she finished in second place. If she’s successful in beating Dibaba’s time on Wednesday, Gidey will add a second world record to her resume, as she already has the fastest 15K in history.
