Is this chihuahua is a better marathoner than you?
Jellybean the Running Chihuahua has lofty aspirations for her 2025 season

If you’ve been running marathons for the last five years, you and this chihuahua from Davis, Calif., have something in common. Jellybean the Running Chihuahua ran her first marathon in 2020 and never looked back–the six-year-old pup has now completed the 42.2K distance six times as well as three ultramarathons, according to Kron4 News.

In the past month, Jellybean and her owner Andrew Owens have made headlines in People, Fox News and the Sacramento Bee. The latter revealed that the pair’s quickest marathon time is three hours and 47 minutes, set at October’s Garmin Kansas City Marathon.

“Have I met dogs faster than her? Absolutely. But the difference in what makes her special is how many people have consistently trained every weekend 20 to 30 miles,” Owens said. The last marathon pup we wrote about was Sydney the Service Aussie, who clocked 7:58:20 at the 2024 New York City Marathon. Jellybean is twice as fast as the NYC dog with legs half as long, making her feat all the more impressive.
Last year, the nine-pound marathoner also became a brand ambassador for Cincinnati’s Flying Pig Marathon.
Like any other runner, Jellybean had to increase her mileage slowly–and because of her inability to communicate how her body was feeling, Owens said he has to watch her body language for signs of discomfort or fatigue. While Owens takes energy gels mid-race for an extra boost, Jellybean gets Blue Buffalo chicken bits to snack on, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Owens says he and Jellybean cover about 20-30 miles consistently on weekends, and often meet up with their other running buddies–both pups and people. The duo also incorporates the walk/run method into their training regime. “You run at a conversational pace for two minutes and then you walk for one,” Owens told Kron 4.
Jellybean and Owens share their running journey together on Instagram as they chase new world record aspirations in the 2025 season. “The goal is to try and make it in the record books. Not only for a marathon but also a half marathon,” Owens said.
