Today is marathon world record holder Eliud Kipchoge’s birthday, and he’s in New York City for marathon weekend (though not racing). According to his Instagram, the GOAT has been participating in various celebrations around marathon weekend, including hanging out with World Athletics Championships medallists Rai Benjamin and Dalilah Muhammad, as well as NBA superstar Carmelo Anthony.

Kipchoge was born in 1984, so he is turning 38. Just a few weeks ago, at the Berlin Marathon, he lowered his own world record in the marathon to 2:01:09. This was his fourth Berlin Marathon title; the Ethiopian runner Haile Gebrselassie is the only other runner with four victories at Berlin. Kipchoge has won 15 of his 17 official marathons, including the 2016 and 2020 Olympic marathons; he lost to Wilson Kipsang at Berlin in 2013 and finished eighth at the 2020 London Marathon. He also set unofficial world records at 2017’s Nike Breaking2 event and INEOS 1:59 in 2019.

Kipgchoge has expressed a desire to win all six Abbott World Marathon Majors. New York and Boston remain on his bucket list for now.

Kipchoge lives and trains with the NN Running Team’s camp in Kaptagat, Kenya, for much of the year, where other notable athletes such as the world’s second-fastest marathoner, Kenenisa Bekele and two-time New York City Marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor also train. He returns home to his farm in Eldoret and spends time with his wife, Grace, and their three children on weekends. He is coached by Patrick Sang.
