On Saturday, Canadian middle-distance runner Kieran Lumb set a new national indoor mile record, clocking an impressive 3:52.39 at the BU Terrier DMR Challenge in Boston. This performance eclipses the previous Canadian record of 3:52.54 set by Cameron Proceviat in 2022 and marks Lumb’s third Canadian record; he claimed both the 3,000m indoor and outdoor records in 2023.

Only a week ago, Vancouver’s Lumb ran a blazing 3:51.89 mile at the Washington Husky Classic in Seattle, taking third–his fastest mile in nearly two years. However, that performance was not eligible for record purposes due to being set on an oversized track, making his Boston achievement the official national record.

26-year-old Lumb has been making significant strides on the international stage, representing Canada in the men’s 1,500m at the 2024 Olympic Games and the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest. Although he did not advance past the heats in these events, he showcased his potential by reaching the men’s 1,500m final at the 2024 World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, where he finished 13th. Lumb also captured a fifth-place finish in the men’s road mile at the inaugural World Road Running Championships in Riga, Latvia, in Oct. 2024.

Lumb’s record-setting run comes just weeks after he revealed he had been dealing with an Achilles issue, which affected his start to the indoor season. He opened with a 3:38 in the 1,500m at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, finishing eighth—slower than he had hoped. Despite the setback, he remained optimistic, sharing on Instagram, “Nonetheless grateful to be healthy and racing.” Lumb’s performances in Seattle and Boston have made it clear he has returned to fine form. “Canadian Indoor Mile Record last night in Boston with 3:52!” he shared on Saturday. “More racing to come.”
