Meet the future Canadian track stars competing at New Balance Indoor Nationals
Age-group world record holder Sawyer Nicholson and U18 Canadian 60m record holder Alexia Jones will be two of the Canadian athletes competing in Boston this weekend

Some of Canada’s best high school athletes are heading to Boston this weekend for the 2025 New Balance Indoor Nationals (NBIN). This prestigious indoor meet annually brings together the top high school athletes from across North America to compete in various indoor track and field events. Known for its high talent level, the event is a platform for many young athletes to showcase their speed in front of collegiate coaches and compete against other elite athletes.
More than 50 Canadian high school athletes are making the trip to Boston for the meet, which starts on Thursday, March 13, and runs until Sunday, March 16. Here’s a list of Canadian athletes to follow over the weekend.
Alexia Jones, 15, Mississauga, Ont. (60m & 200m)
Competing in the high school championship girls’ 60m and 200m, Alexia Jones is one of the most promising young sprinters in Canada. She holds the U18 Canadian record in the girls’ 60m with a time of 7.37 seconds, which she set last year at the Spire Scholastic Invitational in Geneva, Ohio. Jones finished fourth in the women’s 60m at New Balance Nationals in 2024 and enters this year’s event as one of the favourites.
Off the track, Jones admires Sha’Carri Richardson and enjoys cooking and creating content on her TikTok and Instagram accounts.

Silken Torrie, 15, Bognor, Ont. (60m)
One of the athletes making her NBIN debut is Silken Torrie from Bognor, Ont., who will compete in the freshman girls’ 60m. Torrie told Canadian Running that she is most looking forward to seeing and competing at THE TRACK at New Balance and running in a big meet. She mentioned that the closest non-gravel track for her to train with spikes is almost two hours away. Torrie has a personal best of 7.98 seconds for the 60m and aims to break that mark this weekend. Off the track, she enjoys gardening and horseback riding.
Reagan Lovell, 16, Mississauga, Ont. (60m & 200m)
Sticking with the theme of young, talented sprinters, Mississauga’s Reagan Lovell is hitting her stride at just the right time this indoor season. The Grade 11 student-athlete set personal bests in both the 60m and the 200m at the Ontario U20 Indoor Championships, securing her spot at NBIN. Lovell is most excited about sporting the official NBIN bags and having the opportunity to race against some of the fastest girls in North America. She says her biggest inspiration is Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone for how she carries herself both on and off the track.
Off the track, Lovell enjoys sewing and crocheting; she recently started creating granny squares. Perhaps we’ll see track singlets or post-race blankets from her in the future.
Sawyer Nicholson, 13, Stouffville, Ont. (mile & 5,000m)
At 13, Sawyer Nicholson has already built an impressive running resume. In 2023, she set an age-group world record at the Niagara Falls International Marathon’s 5K with a remarkable time of 17:28. Since then, she has set numerous U16 provincial records and won several Ontario road races. Nicholson will compete in the girls’ championship 5,000m and the middle school mile at NBIN, where she comes in as the top-seeded runner.
Nicholson loves the positive community around running. Outside of running, she says she enjoys drawing and aspires to be a motivational speaker one day. Her favourite athlete is Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen, and she admires his energy and speed—”He inspires me to run fast, too,” she says.
Camila Forero Rodriguez, 14, Mississauga, Ont. (800m and mile)
Camila Forero Rodriguez of Mississauga TFC is looking to make waves on her first trip to NBIN, where she will compete in the freshman 800m and mile. She’s most excited about competing on the track and soaking in the experience. She enters the weekend after setting personal bests in the 1,500m and 2,000m earlier this year.
Forero Rodriguez says her favourite athlete is U.S. 10,000m Olympian and New Balance athlete Parker Valby. Outside of track and field, her hobbies include math, particularly algebra.
Emily Reid, 17, Brampton, Ont. (mile and two-mile)
Emily Reid arrives at New Balance Indoor Nationals fresh off setting a 1,500m personal best and winning gold at the Ontario U20 Indoor Track and Field Championships earlier this month. The Grade 11 student is one of the best high school distance runners in the province, with a mile PB of 5:01.39 from the University of Michigan High School Showcase earlier this season. Reid says she loves running because of the people she’s met, and says it’s where she’s made her closest friends. Like her teammate and training partner Forero Rodriguez, Reid sees a future in something math-related if track doesn’t work out. Reid will be racing in both the girls’ championship mile and two-mile races.
Victoria Minott, 16, Mississauga, Ont. (60m and 200m)
Mississauga sprinter Victoria Minott has a bright future ahead. She is one of several up-and-coming sprint phenoms out of Ontario. Minott will be racing in the championship girls’ 60m and 200m at NBIN and says she’s most excited about the exclusive backpack. At 16, Minott already holds a Canadian U18 record, having set the girls’ 4x200m relay record with her Mississauga TFC teammates last year. In addition to track and field, Minott says she does competitive swimming. She told Canadian Running that enjoys the process of running and seeing how much she can improve every day. A fun fact about Minott is she has a big bracelet collection, which she races in, with each bracelet holding a personal meaning.
Ashley Johnson, 17, Mississauga, Ont. (60m and 200m)
Another sprinter to watch from Mississauga TFC is Ashley Johnson. In her final year of high school, Johnson has set personal bests in both the 60m and the 200m—momentum she hopes to carry into NBIN. Johnson will be competing against her training partners and the fastest high school sprinters across North America in the championship girls’ 60m and 200m disciplines. She says she’s most excited about the atmosphere at the venue. Her favourite sprinter is the reigning Olympic 100m champion, Julien Alfred, and outside of track and field, she plays basketball and flag football. “Running makes me feel free; it’s a feel-good sport when you train hard for something and are rewarded for it.”
Savanah Reid, 17, Pickering, Ont. (60m)
Pickering’s Savanah Reid joins an elite list of Canadian high school sprinters heading to Boston for NBIN, where she will compete in the championship girls’ 60m. Reid has had an impressive start to her 2025 season, running three of the fastest four sprint times in her career. This will be Reid’s second appearance at NBIN, following her debut in the 60m two years ago. She says she looks up to American 100m sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson and finds joy off the track in dancing. But she says track and field is where she feels most at home and the happiest.
