The small town of Eganville, Ont., the home of Melissa Bishop, and its neighbouring area have a new landmark.

Unveiled this past weekend was a sign at Melissa Bishop Park just outside of the community of approximately 1,300 residents. This followed her fourth-place finish at the Rio Olympics in August. There, Bishop set a new Canadian record in the women’s 800m running 1:57.02.

“Melissa Bishop Park: With hopes of inspiring the next generation,” the 800m runner wrote on Instagram on Monday.

The park is located at Lake Dore, six kilometres north of Eganville, approximately 90 minutes west of Ottawa. The sign lists the accomplishments of the standout Canadian including being a gold medallist at the Pan Am Games, a two-time Olympian and the national record holder in the women’s 800m.

It was announced in late 2015 that North Algona Wilberforce Township Park at Lake Dore would be renamed Melissa Bishop Park. The sign, however, does not feature a race photo of Bishop.

According to the Eganville Leader, the sign was officially dedicated this past Sunday. The 28-year-old is currently in the off-season and is now on a road trip across the American Midwest after making an appearance at the unveiling on Sept. 25.
