Mohammed Ahmed is one of the greatest Canadian distance runners of all time. Ahmed has nearly re-written the Canadian distance record board, and continues to come up big against some of the world’s toughest competition.

Ahmed is currently in Mammoth Lakes, California, training at altitude with fellow Canadian, Matt Hughes. He has been there for six weeks, and will remain there until the Canadian National Championships in the first week of July.

Ahmed just got back from the Prefontaine Classic, where he ran the 2-mile. He was in the mix for the whole race but got hemmed in with roughly 300m to go and missed the break. “I was a little disappointed that I missed the race when they started accelerating. I got stuck in traffic, so I couldn’t close how I wanted to, and by the time I got around the bend the race was gone. I wish I had been with the top three guys with 150m to go.” Ahmed finished fourth in the race.

The Commonwealth silver medalist drove to Portland right after the race, which took place in Eugene, slept in his apartment and got on a flight to back to altitude the next morning.

His next race is at the Stockholm Diamond League 5,000m on June 10th. He plans to leave a short window between leaving altitude and race time. “I’ll give myself two day to adjust, race, and get out of there. Stockholm will be a good race, because it’s the first 5,000m Diamond League race that you can score points in.” There is a point system within the Diamond League where you accrue points based on your placing at meets. Based on the points an athlete has accumulated, they will receive a spot on the start line in the final. The 5,000m final will take place August 31st in Brussels.

When asked about plans for the rest of the summer, Ahmed is considering running at Canadian Nationals. “I will likely run it and race under-distance,” he says. “A big goal is to qualify for the 5,000m Diamond League final in Brussels. I’m just excited to hit the Diamond League circuit, and get comfortable being uncomfortable.”
