Members of the Williams College cross-country team in Williamstown, Mass., are mourning the tragic loss of a teammate following a ski accident on Monday afternoon. Lincroft, N.J., native Alex Kemp sustained serious head injuries during a crash at Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort in Hancock, Mass., despite wearing a helmet, according to the Berkshire Eagle. Kemp, who was just 19, was transported to two medical centres before he was pronounced dead on Tuesday.

A statement from the Berkshire Country District Attorney’s Office read, “Kemp had gone over an embankment and appeared to have suffered significant head trauma. There is no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident.” The athlete had been navigating down Cutter Trail, reportedly an expert hill and the most difficult slope at the resort.

Kemp was in his first year at the NCAA DIII school. He contributed to a team victory at the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship in early November. Later that month, Kemp crossed the line as the fastest rookie at the NCAA DIII championships, taking 63rd overall and helping his team to secure 10th.

Williams College released a statement to inform students of the tragic accident, offering kind words about Kemp and resources for those needing support. “I know you will join me in thinking about Alex’s family; his friends, teammates and coaches on the track and cross country teams; his entrymates and JAs; and all the many people who care about him,” the school’s president wrote. “I am also holding room in my heart for the first responders and medical professionals who treated him after the accident.”
