Olympic medals and podiums to be made from recycled materials
For the first time, medal podiums and the medals themselves will incorporate recycled materials
According to a report in Inside the Games, the medal podiums at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 will be made out of recycled plastic, and medals out of recycled electronic waste, for the first time.

Organizers are asking Japanese households to donate their recyclable plastics by taking them to collection boxes at the retailer AEON, which will then be recycled by Procter and Gamble, a partner of the 2020 Games. 45,000 tonnes of recyclable plastic will be needed to create the podiums.

According to the report, Japan is the second-highest consumer of plastics in the world, behind the United States.
It was suggested also that some of the plastic to be used in the project will be collected from the ocean.
