Runner shovels entire lane of the track just to get his workout in

A runner in North Carolina didn't let a recent snow storm interrupt his training plans. To nail his workout, he shovelled for more than an hour to clear the snow off of a 400m track.

Runners sometimes go to great lengths to get in their scheduled workouts.

One runner, equipped with a shovel, took it upon himself to go through with his training session at recent track workout despite the local area receiving a large amount of snow. Quinn Schneider shovelled a 400m segment of lane one (each lane is about one metre wide) at a nearby track at Woodlawn School in Mooresville, N.C. “Heavy snow doesn’t curb the desire to run,” he says.

The “workout before the workout” was required as the area received approximately 20 cm of snow making it difficult to run on the 400m rubberized track. (Much of the snow melted prior to the workout.) Davidson is just north of Charlotte, an area which rarely receives intense snow-filled conditions that Canadians may be familiar with.

“I took an hour to shovel off lane one,” he says. “I took a little longer because I wanted to be careful to not damage the track surface with the shovel. I left about a quarter-inch of snow under the shovel so it wouldn’t scrape it and I just let that part melt away. This track is less than one-year-old and it was the first snow that we’ve had on it.”

Schneider’s father Patrick came equipped with his drone, also known as a quadcopter, and captured the runner clearing the snow off the track so he could complete his 4x800m workout that day. He was able to capture aerial video and photos of the feat, plus his workout, which he later posted to social media.

Schneider’s workout could be just the motivation you’re looking for if you’re battling your own winter running conditions. The 18-year-old will be attending the United States Naval Academy where he will run cross-country and track beginning this fall.
