Rachel Cliff announces she’s pregnant

She and her husband, Chris Winter, are expecting their first child in May 2022

On Monday, elite Canadian marathoner Rachel Cliff and her husband, Olympic steeplechaser Chris Winter, announced they’re expecting their first child in May of next year. The couple made the announcement on Instagram, writing, “As everyone says, you can never find the “perfect” time to bring a child into the world, but we are SO looking forward to this next adventure!”

Marathon mantras with Rachel Cliff

Cliff and Winter were married in 2015, and in the summer of 2016, Winter competed in the 3,000m steeplechase at the Rio Olympics. Sadly, Cliff was left off the team that year, despite meeting the qualifying standard for the women’s 5,000m. Winter retired from competitive running, but Cliff continued to chase her Olympic dream. In 2019, she ran well under the standard for the marathon and broke the Canadian women’s marathon record and broke her own Canadian half-marathon record that same year. After the Olympics were postponed for one year due to COVID-19, Malindi Elmore went on to break Cliff’s record, and three other women also ran standard so she was left disappointed again.

In her Instagram post, Cliff describes this new adventure as “the reset she needed.” In his own Instagram post, Winter also celebrated the couple’s announcement. “While we are both excited, anxious, fearful, and likely naive, I am so incredibly proud of @raecliff and how she had already handled the many changes and stresses of pregnancy. An incredible adventure awaits,” he said.
