Runner allegedly used childhood friend’s passport to compete

Ksenia Savina of Russia has been charged with using EPO and a false identity

Ksenia Savina of Russia has been charged with several doping infractions and using a false identity. According to the Associated Press, the 800m runner is facing four charges including using the banned blood-booster EPO, complicity, tampering with samples and using a childhood friend’s passport to compete during 2015 when Russia was banned from competition for state-backed doping.

A new method of mass spectrometry could detect some drugs previously undetectable.

Savina has never made any major championships, but her 800m personal best of 1:59.97 from 2017 is truly a world-class mark. The runner reportedly used a Ukrainian passport to compete internationally during the time that her country wasn’t permitted in competition.

Russia and RUSADA, the Russian anti-doping agency, was reinstated in the fall of 2018 following a nine to two vote in favour, and a WADA key review committee recommendation that the Russian anti-doping agency be reconsidered.

Since that vote, WADA has received data from the RUSADA’s Moscow laboratory that they will use to build a case against doping violators. WADA President Craig Reedie said in a statement January 17th, “WADA now embarks on the second phase, which entails the authentication and review of the data to ensure it is complete and that it has not been compromised. Given the amount of data, that will take some time to achieve but our experts have the tools they need to be able to verify the data with a high degree of confidence.”
