Canadian running legend Ed Whitlock died early in the morning of March 13, days after turning 86. The runner, one of the running world’s all-time greatest, died at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto to end his battle with prostate cancer. He passed away at 4:00 a.m.

Whitlock was one of the world’s most gifted distance runners having a string of world record runs to his name including breaking the 3:00-hour barrier in the marathon at age 73 when he ran 2:54:49. He’s the only person over 70 to have ever achieved this.

The London-born runner moved to Canada after college and lived in Milton, Ont. He is survived by his wife, Brenda, his sister, Catherine, and his two sons Neil and Clive.

There is no doubt that he will be greatly missed by those in the running scene. To celebrate the life of Mr. Whitlock, we are highlighting commentary by those in the running scene.
