Among the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Fla. was the school’s cross-country coach.
Scott Beigel, who was a geography teacher at the high school, was one of 17 people killed in the mass shooting on Wednesday. Beigel, 35, unlocked his classroom to allow students to take shelter and was shot closing the door.
“When he opened the door, he had to relock it so that we could stay safe, but he didn’t get the chance,” Kelsey Friend, one of the students whose lives he’s credited with saving, told a CNN reporter.
“Thank you for bringing and having this amazing person in life and giving him the power to be stronger than I could have ever been,” Friend told Beigel’s family.
