Sound bites from the Sunday long run

Everything you'll say before noon on a Sunday

friends running

For most, Sunday morning means a slow and lazy start followed by brunch with friends. For a runner, brunch is important, but the start to their day looks a little different. For most runners, Sunday involves an early start and their heaviest training day of the week.

Here’s everything a runner might say before noon on the day of a long run.

“I really need coffee.”

The alarm has gone off and you mumble to yourself that you really need a cup of Joe.

“I need more coffee.”

You remind yourself the one cuppa isn’t sufficient before 30K, and reach for another.

“I’m hungover.”

You head out and find your running pals. Inevitably one person announces that they’re dealing with a severe hangover because the long run slipped their mind sometime on Saturday evening.

“Wow this feels terrible.”

The first few miles are usually the worst. Everyone knows it, someone will always announce it.

“Anyone have an extra gel?”

There’s always one group member who isn’t prepared. This group member is usually hungry first.

“There’s a water fountain soon, right?”

During a summer run, there’s no such thing as too many water stops.

“I have to tie my shoes.”

Not everyone has adopted the Boa lacing system.

“I can’t believe our race is only four weeks away.”

Times flies when you’re marathon training. Somehow, the race that you started preparing for months ago is just around the corner.

“My watch won’t sync.”

This comes from the person who’s asking everyone to delay the start of the run to ensure their satellite connection is solid and their Strava stats will be accurate.

“What pace you got?”

This comes from the person who’s skeptical of their GPS watch.

“Where we eating after this?”

This is a very important question. Once a brunch location has been decided upon, the anticipation of good food can help you through the final 5K.

“What should I title this run?”

Especially if it was a run you’re proud of, crowd sourcing an activity title is always important.
