Strava artist creates Frida Kahlo in San Francisco
Lenny Maughan's likeness of the Mexican painter is accurate down to the unibrow
On July 20, Lenny Maughan created the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo’s face on Strava by running the streets of San Francisco’s north end, and it’s accurate right down to the unibrow.
According to Maughan’s Strava data for that day’s run, it took him six hours, eight minutes and 15 seconds, and covered 46.56 kilometres, with 1,090m of elevation gain–a pretty impressive run, even without the Strava art.

Maughan didn’t do it on the first try. We could see that he’s been working on Frida for a while, tracing only her features on July 6. There are a couple of previous doodles, as well as a shamrock for St. Patrick’s Day, a pig for Chinese New Year (February 9), a footprint on January 19 (“Barefoot run”) and a very cool hand holding chopsticks on December 15, 2018–about 30 images in total.
Maughan told SFGate he has been living and running in the city for 20 years, and practising Strava art for three.
Strava’s latest update allows you to use the Route Builder feature to create Strava art. You can now use a touch screen to draw where you want to go, rather than having to click your way around a map.
