Austin Metcalf, a 17-year-old thrower from Frisco, Texas, was fatally stabbed at a high school track meet on Wednesday morning

On Wednesday morning, a high school track and field meet at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas, came to a sudden and tragic close when an altercation broke out between two student-athletes in the stands, resulting in a fatal stabbing. Local news reports state that around 10 a.m., 17-year-old thrower Austin Metcalf was stabbed by Karmelo Anthony, another 17-year-old from a competing school. Metcalf was transported to hospital but later succumbed to his injuries; Anthony has been arrested on first-degree murder charges.

Metcalf was a student at Frisco’s Memorial High School; he was slated to compete in the high school boys discus throw and shot put events. He was also linebacker on the school’s football team, with the goal of competing in college; he played along his twin brother, Hunter. “I tried to whip around as fast as I could, but I didn’t see the stab,” Hunter told media. “I looked at my brother and I’m not going to talk about the rest. I tried to help him.”
The twins’ father, Jeff, started a Go Fund Me page to raise funds to honour his son’s life. As of Thursday, more than US$91,000 had been raised.

Anthony, a student at Frisco Centennial High School, was set to run the 100m dash and compete in the long jump. He also played on his school’s football team. “The suspect is in custody and there is no further threat to the public,” a Frisco police report stated. “No bond has been set at this time.” The Frisco Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident.
