VIDEO: 70-year-old Calgary man receives Nike lightup shoes, freaks out

Ted Thorne has been jealous of footwear marketed to children for almost a decade. On his 70th birthday, he finally received his own flashy pair of shoes.

This grandfather who received a pair of light up Nike shoes for his birthday couldn’t have had a better reaction.

Alberta man Ted Thorne was celebrating his 70th birthday with family members at home. When it came to gift time, they presented him with a Nike shoe box. The pair of sneakers inside was the highlight of Thorne’s big day.

When he opened up the box, it appeared that he had been given a nice looking pair of running shoes. But when he pulled them out of the box, he was surprised to see red flashing soles. He couldn’t contain his excitement, much to his family’s amusement.

“Get out of town, What?!” He said as he held the flashing sneaker. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”

Thorne couldn’t get over the shock of receiving such a flashy pair of running shoes. His reaction was similar to that of a child on Christmas morning. Apparently, he has been jealously eyeing children with this sort of footwear for years.

The video has been seen on many social media outlets but became popular recently on Reddit as The Huffington Post reported earlier this week. But it was his daughter, Sarah, who originally posted the video.

“This is what happens when you give your dad something he’s wanted for about eight years, but he always thought they made them just for kids,” she wrote in the post with the video. “He was wrong … They make them for big kids too,” she wrote on her Instagram.

Thorne is happy to finally have his pair of light-up kicks. “Well, a dream come true,” he said.

At first, a runner could mistake the running shoes for the Nike self-lacing Hyper Adapt shoes. Those are the running brand’s most recent innovation and also come with lights in the sole. Those however retail in late-November.
