WATCH: world champion hurdles across frozen lake
The Norwegian hurdler embraced his Nordic toughness and said "zero excuses" to the zero-degree temperatures

Who says you need skates to be fast on ice? On Thursday, three-time world champion Karsten Warholm laced up his track spikes, let out a battle cry and ran full-speed across a frozen lake in Norway, clearing a few hurdles along the way. He was decked out in only shorts and a fuzzy trapper hat. “Just a normal training day in Norway,” he wrote in the caption. “Zero excuses!”

The stunt was a collaboration with Red Bull. After the sprint session, Warholm took a sip from his Red Bull energy drink before plunging–spikes and all–into an ice bath carved into the lake’s frozen surface. A dip in a Nordic lake at this time of year is no joke–while Norway is transitioning to spring in March, temperatures still typically fall between -5 and 5 C. In the thick of the winter months, however, some areas of Norway can reach temperatures as low as -40 C.

Outside of elite competitions, Warholm loves a fun challenge. In September, the 29-year-old went head-to-head against the world’s greatest pole vaulter, Mondo Duplantis, in a 100m sprint. Duplantis showed off his astonishing speed and came out victorious with a time of 10.37 seconds.
Alongside his three world championship titles, Warholm holds an Olympic gold and an Olympic silver from Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Games, respectively. The Puma athlete also went on the smash the 400m hurdles world record, clocking 45.94 seconds.
