Wendy Alexis breaks Canadian W70 100m record
The masters sprint sensation isn't slowing down as she closes in on the world record

The 2026 Canadian Masters Track and Field Championships concluded Sunday in Laval, Que., and among a series of standout performances, two Canadian records fell. Masters sprint superstar Wendy Alexis once again lowered her own Canadian W70-74 100m record, winning the title in 14.41 seconds to cap off a double-gold weekend. Paul Gautier also broke his own record in the M60 throws pentathlon with 3,670 points.

The sprint double
Alexis once again stole the spotlight, breaking the Canadian W70-74 100m record before returning to claim gold in the 200m in 31.11 seconds. Her victory in the rain-soaked 200m completed the sprint double, but the Canadian veteran has her sights set on an even bigger accomplishment.
“It’s a good race and a good track, but I’m getting a little greedy, and I’m looking for a faster time,” Alexis told Athletics Canada. “But it’s a season’s best; it’s a Canadian record, so I’m grateful, and I’m trying to be satisfied, but it’s very close to the world record, and my season is running out, and I was hoping to get it soon.”
Although her season is winding down, Alexis still has one major competition remaining: the 2026 World Masters Athletics Outdoor Championships in South Korea, beginning Aug. 22. There, she’ll have another opportunity to reclaim the W70+ world record of 14.37, currently held by Chile’s Sara Montecinos.
More notable performances
World 200m record holder Karla Del Grande earned silver behind Alexis in both the 100m and 200m, clocking 15.35 and 32.64, respectively.
The 73-year-old later climbed to the top of the podium in the 200m hurdles. Although she was the lone competitor in the event, Del Grande posted a strong 38.47, less than a second off her own Canadian record of 37.71, set in 2024.

Rothsay, N.B.’s Gautier updated the record books after scoring 3,670 points in the M60 throws pentathlon, surpassing his 2025 Canadian record of 3,659 points. The pentathlon throw combines five events, including javelin, shot put, discus, hammer throw and weight throw, with athletes receiving three attempts in each discipline.
