Wesley Korir running on Canadian soil for the holidays

Former Boston Marathon champion Wesley Korir is having a white Christmas running on Canadian roads this holiday season.

It looks like Wesley Korir will be seeing a white Christmas this year. The elite runner and 2012 Boston Marathon runner from Kenya is in Canada for the holidays.

Korir is currently in St. Clements, Ont. with his wife, Canadian elite distance runner Tarah Korir. The small southern Ontario town where Tarah is originally from, is just outside of Kitchener-Waterloo. As it’s in a prevalent Mennonite area, it’s likely that the Korirs will be spotting several horse and buggy carts as they head out on the dirt paths for their holiday runs.

RELATED: Getting to know Tarah Korir

Wesley just posted about his winter running today before heading outdoors in -12C weather. “Getting ready to go out for a run here in Canada,” he wrote. “-12 degrees. It is called being committed.”

That -12 C weather is a far cry from what he is used to. Korir grew up in the hot climate of Kitale, Kenya. He grew up in poverty but found running. It was only when he was offered a scholarship to the U.S. that he went to North America. He met Tarah at the University of Louisville where they both ran track. Since then, they have relocated to Kenya where their two daughters also live with them.

While the family is back in Canada on a regular basis, Tarah was back solo this fall where she made an appearance at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. Her kids stayed at home in Kenya with Wesley.
