Two records were set on Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver on June 21 as part of the Multi-Grouse Grind Challenge. Ian Robertson completed the 2.9-kilometre Grouse Grind 16 times on Tuesday to set a new men’s record and Andrea Johb set a new best for women with 15 climbs.

The race began at 4 a.m. local time with the final climb ending around 10:45 p.m. There were 36 athletes, according to Grouse Mountain, that took part in the third annual event, which helped raise more than $21,000 for B.C. Children’s Hospital.
Three women completed 14 grinds during the event to top the previous record and finish behind Johb. Robertson completed the hike three more times than the next closest male competitor.

The Grouse Grind, sometimes known as “Mother Nature’s Stairclimber,” is a trail up the face of Grouse Mountain with an elevation gain of 853 metres on a 2.9-kilometre trail. The popular tourist destination is a hotspot for hikers and runners in the summer looking to get in a bit of strength training. There are 2,830 stairs.

Once at the top, people must take the gondola back down to the bottom of the mountain as descending the trail is prohibited. More than 150,000 people hike the trail each year.

According to CTV News, the Multi-Grind Challenge is the only event sanctioned for record-setting purposes on the mountain. Outside of official events, another runner, Oliver Bibby, 18 at the time, completed the trail 16 times in one day in 2013.
