Shelley Doucet cracks the top-10 at World Long Distance Mountain Championships

Over in Italy, the long-distance category of the World Mountain Running Championships took athletes for a 32K off-road tour in wet conditions.

Six Canadians, including Matt Setlack who competed at the shorter category of the World Mountain Running Championships the weekend prior, competed at Sunday morning’s event in Premana, Italy. Shelley Doucet, the Francophone Games marathon champion, was the lone Canadian to break into the top-10, placing ninth in the women’s division. She completed the challenging mountainous course in 4:11:10.

Doucet, from Quispamsis, N.B., finished two minutes back of Setlack, the top overall Canadian finisher, who clocked 4:09:36. Marianne Hogan too broke the top-20, along with Doucet, placing 18th in 4:24:48.

By comparison, the longest distance for the short-course mountain running championships, held on July 30, was 13K. Meanwhile, Sunday’s event was more than twice that distance with significant elevation change in the mountains outside of Milan.
