Barkley Marathons update: it’s down to six

One runner remains on loop two, and he will be tapped out when he arrives back in camp

Only six runners remain in contention for a possible Fun Run (three loops in 40 hours) at the Barkley Marathons in Tennessee on Sunday afternoon, after two high-profile DNF’s. Several others remain on loop two.

John Kelly, who finished the race in 2017, dropped out after two loops (and a nap) earlier today, saying he no longer felt the drive to complete the course, knowing what it would take. Last night, three-time finisher Jared Campbell dropped out after injuring his ankle on the first loop.

The six remaining runners are Guillaume CalmettesGreig Hamilton, Karel Sabbe, Tomokazu Ihara, Johan Steene and Jamil Coury.

Those who complete loop three and who intend to continue must start loop four by 9:23 p.m. tonight (36 hours after the race started). Anyone who completes loop three by 1:23 a.m. Monday can boast a “Fun Run” finish.

The Real Keith also tweets that only one runner remains on loop two (Hisayuki Tateno), but the cutoff has passed, and he will be tapped out when he arrives back in camp at Frozen Head.

All of the women who started yesterday have DNF’d.

In 2018, there were no Barkley finishers. Canadian Gary Robbins (who is injured this year) was the only Fun Run finisher, and his time prevented him from attempting a fourth loop.
