Canadian ultrarunning star Robert Krar won one of America’s top 50 mile races last weekend on Dec. 7.

The race attracts some big names in the ultrarunning scene because it is one of only a few ultra races with large prize purses, this one offering $30,000 in prize money. It is also the last stop on The North Face’s Endurance Challenge series. The race was held in Golden Gate recreation area outside San Francisco, Calif.

The bearded Krar, who was born in Hamilton but lives in Flagstaff, Az., finished the series-culminating event in 6:10:10, more than ten minutes ahead of runner-up Cameron Clayton of Boulder, Colo.

The Canadian dropped out of the JFK 50 miler with 10 miles remaining a few weeks prior to this win. He was one of the favourites to win that race. Krar also placed second at Western States 100 mile race, the oldest and most prestigious ultra in the world, earlier in 2013 and won the 100K Ultra Race of Champions in October, beating ultrarunning star Kilian Jornet.

The top female was Michele Yates in 7:21:51. She trains in Littleton, Colo.

The event also featured a 50K, marathon, marathon relay, and a run for kids.
