Damian Hall completes Paddy Buckley Round in winter record

The British fell runner and Inov-8 ambassador tried to make his run as eco-friendly as possible

British fell runner Damian Hall45, has set a winter record on the Paddy Buckley Round in northwestern Wales, finishing the 47-peak mountain circuit in 21:30, a new winter record. His time was seven minutes faster than the previous winter record held by Jim Mann.

Hall is very familiar with the Paddy Buckley, having set the (summer) record of 17:31 last year, after an earlier crack at it in March 2019 during which bad weather prevented him from finishing in under 24 hours (which is always the goal). Hall also crewed several other runners in their attempts to conquer the Paddy Buckley last year, including Nicky Spinks in her double. (Spinks also competed at the Barkley Marathons in 2019.)

Trying to set a fast time in winter means potentially battling raging winds, snowstorms and dense fog. Hall also chose to run it unsupported, carrying his own food up and down the route, which has more than 8,500 metres of elevation change (almost the height of Mount Everest) and which includes running up and down Mount Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales. (For Hall, who ran the circuit clockwise, starting and ending in the Welsh village of Llanberis, it was the 42nd out of 47 peaks.)

Hall, whose plans for 2020 also include going back to UTMB, where he finished fifth in 2018 and 12th in 2017, is a quirky mix of oddball humour (he refers to his fell-running trips as ‘bimbles’) combined with a passionate concern for environmental sustainability. The Inov-8 ambassador accomplished the Paddy Buckley without using any gels or bars in plastic wrappers and consumed no animal products, his diet consisting mostly of vegan brownies. He also travelled to Wales from his home in Wiltshire and back again (a distance of 450 miles or 724.5 kilometres round-trip) via public transit.
