Three-time UTMB champion sets FKT on California’s John Muir Trail

France's François D'haene sets a new benchmark for California's John Muir Trail completing the route in less than three days

François D'Haene

France’s François D’haene broke the John Muir Trail fastest-known time by more than 12 hours completing the 359K route on Tuesday.

The three-time winner of the Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc needed 67 hours and 26 minutes to complete one of the most famous routes in the United States. The trail extends between Yosemite and Mt. Whitney in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Most hikers take three weeks to complete the California route. D’haene is the first person to complete the route, which climbs 14,630m, in less than three days.

American Leor Pantilat held the previous FKT of three days, seven hours, and 36 minutes, according to iRunFar. (79:36 in hours and minutes.) D’haene began at the summit of Mt. Whitney, the highest summit in the contiguous United States and the Sierra Nevada, before reaching Happy Isles in Yosemite Valley. It was a supported effort in a non-race setting.
