Heather Anderson to teach online FKT course

Curious about what it takes to set an FKT? Here's your chance to learn from a master

If attempting a new FKT (fastest known time) is one of your New Year’s resolutions, this is your opportunity to do it right. Heather Anderson (aka Anish) is the author of the book Mud, Rocks, Blazes, currently holds multiple FKTs and is now offering a course to teach others how to plan an FKT attempt of their own.

Heather Anderson becomes first woman to complete Triple Crown in a calendar year

Anderson is an expert hiker, and currently holds six different FKTs, including the Pacific Crest Trail (60 days, 17 hours and 12 minutes), the Appalachian Trail (54 days, seven hours and 48 minutes) and the Arizona Trail (19 days, 17 hours and nine minutes). She was named the National Geographic Adventurer of the Year in 2019, and is the only woman to complete the Appalachian, Pacific Crest and Continental Divide National Scenic Trails three times each.

Her intro course teaches you everything that goes into planning an FKT attempt in 11 twice-weekly emails that get sent to your inbox from January 2-16. It isn’t live, so you can complete it at your own pace. Topics covered will include:

  1. What is an FKT?
  2. FKT vs. racing: similarities and differences
  3. Fastpacking methodologies
  4. Choosing the style and route for you
  5. Gearing up
  6. Nutrition
  7. Physical preparation
  8. Planning for your first FKT
  9. Documenting your FKT
  10. Logistics in the field
  11. Miscellaneous tips and tricks

FKT or Strava CR?

The course is limited to 10 students, and each participant will be given access to some of Anderson’s actual FKT planning spreadsheets. Registration is still open, but ends on December 31. If you’re interested in taking part in the course, you can sign up by heading to her website.
