How non-ultrarunners can race the World Trail Majors
The Gran Canaria World Trail Majors series has added shorter races to appeal to a larger crowd

Trail running isn’t just for ultramarathoners, and the Gran Canaria World Trail Majors series (WTM) is acknowledging that by rolling out a new Short Series designed to welcome more runners into the fold. With distances ranging from just over 30K to just under 60K, this new addition aims to celebrate the diversity of trail running while maintaining the unique character of each race.
World Trail Majors basics
The WTM series launched in 2024 with the hopes of steering trail running “in the right direction” by celebrating and preserving the identity of grass-roots races. Prizes are awarded via the official ranking of the WTM international circuit, and Canadian women excelled last year, claiming five of the top 15 final placements. Quebec Mega Trail, held annually at the beginning of July, is the sole Canadian stop in the series.

Shorter challenge, no shortage of adventure
Not everyone dreams of conquering 100K or more on the trails, and the Short Series recognizes that, providing a meaningful alternative for those who prefer shorter distances or are new to trail running. According to the WTM website, these races feature “logical and interesting routes that give each race the character and DNA of the location, of the organisation, of its sporting culture.”
While these races may not hit the ultra-distance mark, they still demand effort and preparation. For many, they offer the perfect opportunity to experience the thrill of trail racing without the commitment of ultra-distance training. As the the WTM website puts it, the series is a stepping stone for developing runners or a welcoming option for those who simply prefer shorter distances.

For fast elites and first-timers alike
The Short Series isn’t just for newcomers. Experience and elite runners will also find plenty to challenge them, with courses designed to test speed and strategy. Cash prizes await the swiftest, adding an extra layer of excitement.
To keep the competition balanced, only the two best results of the season will count, a rule carried over from the Long Series. This approach ensures runners can participate without overloading their schedules, while still encouraging global participation.
A growing global series
With the recent additions of the Grampians Peaks Trail and Vietnam Mountain Marathon, the Gran Canaria World Trail Majors now boasts 12 events across multiple continents. Whether you’re an elite chasing podiums or a beginner looking for your first trail adventure, the new Short Series promises a rewarding and inclusive experience. The world of trail running just got a little bigger—and a little more inviting.
