Returning for 2019 is the 2018 champion and course record-holder, Jim Walmsley. Walmsley stunned the running community last year by not only shattering the old course record at WSER but he also made an appearance on the roads, settling the age-old trail vs. road debate by crushing a half-marathon and qualifying for the Olympic trials.

On the women’s side, Courtney Dauwalter is the defending champion who’s returning for a second year. She took the title during her WSER debut in 2018 and is coming back for more.

Francesca Canepa of Italy is running WSER for the first time. The 2018 UTMB winner is a huge addition to the lineup, and what she lacks in WSER experience, she makes up for in ability to run downhill.

South Africa’s Ryan Sandes is one of the more experienced and competitive WSER runners. Sandes was the 2017 champion and has two other top-five finishes to his name.

Where they are at halfway

Walmsley is leading the group this year but is being tailed by Hazen, along with Matt Daniels, Stephen Kersh, Gediminas Grinius and Tom Evans. The trail pack has several minutes between each of them, except Grinius and Evans who were together through 38 miles. Walmsley and Hazen are both ahead of course record pace.

In the women’s race Courtney Dauwalter is in the lead by around 10 minutes, with Clare Gallagher and Brittany Peterson in second and third. Dauwalter will have to work to maintain her lead, because Gallagher and Peterson aren’t far behind. Dauwalter is nearly four minutes ahead of course record pace.

Canadian Kat Drew is in 11th, easily within striking distance of the top 10.
