Barkley Marathons finisher John Kelly calls this creation his “indulgence”

"My wonderful creation I call the KrispyBo: two Krispy Kreme doughnuts with a Bojangles’ cajun filet patty in the middle," Kelly says of his post-race indulgence.

John Kelly, the 15th finisher of the Barkley Marathons, is still in the recovery stages following one of the world’s toughest footraces in Frozen Head State Park, Tenn. The Washington, D.C. resident finished the 100-plus miler (160K) in 59:30:53 while Canadian Gary Robbins got lost on course and did not finish within the 60-hour time limit. The Barkley Marathons was held last weekend and finished on Monday.

Kelly posted a brief recap of the event to his blog on April 6. He admits that he has been overwhelmed with messages from people commending his performance and calling it inspirational. At the end of the post, Kelly says his appetite has partially returned before describing his “creation” that he enjoys twice per year, once after each of his main races.

“I can at least already feel my appetite returning, and although it was a few days late I finally got to treat myself to a KrispyBo today,” Kelly writes.

The “KrispyBo” has three items including two Krispy Kreme doughnuts and a cajun fried chicken patty from Bojangles, an American southeastern regional chain of fast food restaurants. Simply, the calorie-rich creation is a variant of the cajun filet sandwich but instead of buns, Kelly uses Krispy Kreme doughnuts

“I allow myself to eat one of these wonderful monstrosities twice a year (once after each of my main races),” he says. “This particular version was cheesecake on bottom and maple iced on top.”
