The trail-running community in western Canada is grieving the sudden death of Abi Moore of Fernie, B.C., who was killed in a car accident on Highway 3 east Crowsnest Pass, Alta., on Wednesday, according to a CBC report. Along with her husband, Mike Moore, Moore was the owner of Stag Leap Running Co. and race director of the Lone Wolf Backyard Ultra and the Elk Valley Ultra, scheduled for July 27. (That race is cancelled.) Moore was 44.
Mike Moore posted on Instagram on Friday: “Abi Moore tragically passed away suddenly on Wednesday night, and it has not only devastated the ones who loved her most but has left a hole in an entire community of runners and adventurers worldwide. Abi lived with the utmost kindness and passion for her family, friends, community, dogs (and not just hers but every dog she ever came across, and as we all know, running in the mountains. I was the luckiest of all and was able to live my life alongside hers for the past 17 years and to be her husband and best friend has been the greatest blessing that I could have ever dreamed of.”
Moore was also a strong competitor in her own right, with many podium finishes and wins around the ultra-trail scene in western Canada, including the Black Spur Ultra, Sinister 7 50-Miler and the Golden Ultra. In recent years she also participated in the London Marathon to raise funds for Alzheimer’s disease.
A British immigrant, Moore had recently returned from a visit to her mother, who lives in Scotland, where Moore lived from the age of eight until she made her circuitous journey to Fernie in the early 2000s. A 2021 local news item described her life in more detail, and particularly her devotion to the outdoors and to outdoor sports, including trail running.
According to the report, Moore was driving her SUV, veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a bus carrying 27 people; eight people were injured, and two were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
